Depict
The here and now. This film is about two strangers sharing an unusual moment at a bus stop.
One of the short films from Depict that I have chosen is ''The here and now.'' This video lasts 1:40 minute but the actual film, with out instruction text in the beginning and the description in the end, lasts about 1:29 minute. This film starts off with Depict's logo and this shot lasts about 4 seconds and then it shows the title (name of the film) THE HERE AND NOW ; this scene only lasts for 2 seconds.
This film starts off in the very classic way which is showing the location from the high angle. I believe this shot was filmed on the bridge. This shot is one of the most useful shots to begin the film and has a wonderful effect especially on the short film because you want to make this part of the scene quickly and smoothly.
Next this scene shows a man wearing a smart suit standing alone reading a book. He also has his head phones on. This part of the scene is done in a very professional way, including the stereotype of a business man and he is waiting for the bus alone. After this is where the story starts to begin. There is a women walking into the scene at the bus stop and she puts a poster on the bus stop shelter. This looks like she has lost someone or something. The scene doesn't actually clearly show what's in the poster and then next she start crying. She is a total stranger to the man but then the man gives her his shoulder for her to cry on. This movie is quite strange and this part of the scene is something that doesn't actually happen in real life or it would be awkward if it happened in the real life. In the end the women stopped crying and walked out of the scene. This film would be more like agent of change, Quest and closure.
The close-up shot is when the camera frames tight to the object to show more of the information on the objective this is a very powerful shot it takes up the personal space and emotion of the character. This also can give us a clue about what could happen next by the expression of the characters' action for example, guilty, happy or sad.
There are three types of close up shot which is Medium close up (MCU) , this shot falls somewhere between close up shot and mid shot, usually showing between the head and the shoulder of the character. Close up(CU) is showing alot of feature and emotion through the character's face. This shot takes up the whole frame just for someones head. Extreme Close Up (ECU or XCU): this shot used to zoom up to small or a very small object to show the feature and it take all the camera frame for example eyes or a ring. In the scene there is close up and medium close up.
The point of view shot (POV) is also very important technique in the film. This technique is one of the foundations of films editing technique, this technique is used for when the character is looking at the object and when there is a POV shot by the main character in the film. It's known as the subjective viewpoint and it encourages the audience to think that they are looking through the actor's eyes but there are none in this scene.
The reaction shot is when the moving picture is referring to the actor's feelings and usually this shot is a cut from a long or wide shot to close up shot to show a connection to the action of the character and the emotion. One of the reaction shots is when the woman is walking off the scene and then the shot changed to CU and focusing on the man's face. It looks almost like he is wondering why she cried and also he's pround of him self that he give her a hug to stop her crying and from the fact that she is a total stranger to him.
Once we have the audience interested in the film we must keep them interested, this can be done by keeping them believing in the emotion trough the action in the film. You can't keep the audience through the boring scenes. Something must happen to make the audience feel the emotion by the reaction of the characters. For example the main character died or fighting scene and makes the audience keep guessing what could happen next. One of the Suspense techniques in this scene is when the woman starts crying then it cuts to the the man's face, reaction, then that is the point where the audience will start guessing what he's going to do. Suspense can included a few different techniques which are cross-cut, editing pace, camera angle, manipulation of time, point of view shot and mise-en-scene. These techniques gave the film quality because in each technique it shows or passes on the emotion to the audience.
Cross-cut is when you cut from one shot to another in different locations for example the conversation scene, this also provides the narrative to happen and it also flows well because it makes a sharp turn between 2 actions and it encourages the audience to compare between 2 shots. Also I believe this is the most used technique in the film editing. In this scene it's used from the beginning to the end , this technique has been used in this scene every time it cut from one shot to another.
Editing pace is when the editing speed increase after the normal speed to make the audience wondering what could happen next this can also be very effective, it's basically when the boring scene jump to an excited film. This techniques used alot in the horror film to encourage the audiences into fear for example when the victim of the murder slowing down and thinking he/she now salf but then next the murder jump up be hide them. but there is none in this scene.
The film have start off with wide shot and and then close up to show face expression of the character and using medium close up to tell the viewer what is happening. In the scene also have eye line match ( when a man turn back and looking at a woman ) and finish off with medium close up.
The director start filming using lowe camera angle pointing down to show the location and using st right (object, body level) when the scene start to begin but strangely there is not point of view shot in this film.
