Animation Evaluation

Drag Race

Constraints
As I am aware of the legal issues for Ofcom and the regulator there isn't any brand or other copy right issues in the scene. There is one, which is E4's logo but on the guideline of the E4 competition we are allow to used it.

However the difficulties are on the filming which is using a human as a controlling Muppet, as they are always move over the limit of the action and also not always do exactly what you want. Even though there is a way to figure it out, which is setting them up picture by picture but it will take too much time and wouldn't meet the deadline.
Time available of the actor is also a big issue for the live action animation when we have to wait for the person's availability to film which can be a waste of time.
Location in this scene is in college but during lesson time so there are not many students or staffs using the pathway, however unluckily during the filming time there is a person visiting the college and I have to wait for them to leave the pathway.

Management
At first I've decided to use the idea of a guy wearing a suit creepily following a girl but the scene is set at night and it's too dark to see the action even if I used a DSLR camera and put The ISO on 6400. So, instantly I've quickly come up with another idea but completely forgotten about the unbelievable animation part and have to re-film again. Then I thought of the most simple idea which could be a great subject to complete, also to keep in mind that I've got only 3 days left until the deadline including that day. So I went out and filmed during the lesson time and completed it later that day.
I'd say I didn't stick to the original ideas which I did the research on because of the issues but on the final ideas I've strictly stick with the story board and the process of the stop motion animation, at this points I couldn't get hold of DSLR so I went on and used a 16 mega pixel digital camera.
Because of the issues and mistakes in the process during filming I'd say the project management was poor but my time management and planning for each scene worked well as I am still able to finish 2 days before the deadline.
The first ideas(Night of E4)

Second ideas (E4 Bath)

Following brief's content
Before starting the filming and coming up with the ideas I did the research on the E-sting competition on the E4 channel's website. I read through the guidelines and the brief to fully understand before taking further action in this project. I also looked at different projects about e-sting on it's website and others like YouTube so I have a full idea on what they want in this project. For the conclusion I'm happy that my animation meets the brief on timing (10 second) and gives the full version of story telling. (click to go to E-sting video webpage)

Feedback
After the deadline, we watches the film and received/gave the feedback to each other on both positive and negative points. From my feedback I received of those who took part in it,they like the fact that the audio and action work well together plus the black and white but leave the original color of the E4's logo and the creativity of an easy subject. On the negative side, the frame is shaking while tracking and it's not so smooth. However most people like the ideas of "drag race" and the way the E4 logo is represented at the end of the scene. Next I compiled my questionnaire,  then sent it to friends, family, teachers and the public with the link to my completed E4 ident using the college e-mail and social network like Facebook, in order to collect some more data and review my production. However I found that hardly anyone is responding to my questionnaire and some of the data I collected from it is un-realistic and there are some stupid responses from it. So I decided to print out 20 questionnaires using the same questions, I handed it out to my friends, teachers and family who had seen my E-4 ident.

This is some of the evidence to show that the respondents like the contrast of the scene (question 7)
(black and white but keep the original color for the logo)

Scene contrast

Questionnaires

Conclusion of feedback from the questionnaires

This is the overall conclusion from the feedback, The average movement score is 7.65, I calculated this by adding all the scores up and dividing by 20, which is the number of questionnaires that were given out, I did the same with production rating and got  7.725.

Quantitative Result
15/20 of those to take part in questionnaires are male
17/20 people know this this animation is a life action animation.
17/20 people who think my animation is good enough to be on an E4 Channel,
18/20 people like the look of the character.
20/20 people who like the contrast of the animation.
Half of the people who took part in my questionnaires are lower class and the other half is working class.

What have I learnt from this project.
As my project is on life action animation; I have learnt that to control people as an object for life action animation can get frustrating as they won't able to understand you 100% .  Also, to come up with a good idea for the life action animation of the impossible live movement and fit in 10 seconds is not an easy thing to do even you plan it well. The rules and brief on the project can cut down your creativeness; on this one it had to be 10 seconds exactly and it must have the E4 logos showing in the scene within 10 seconds. This means the idea has to fit in the 10 seconds, it's hard to tell a story in 10 seconds.

Would I take animation further
To be truthful I've never been interested in working in the animation sector and now I've done some more of the animation work; full production, including paper work, editing, sound and filming; I've confirmed my choice in that i'll never work for this industry. The animation industry isn't suitable for me at all as you have to be very patient for each movement, sound and effect to make it good enough in the industry. However when looking at working through the brief in this project and the way I've planned out the overall management, I believe that I have the skills to work on the projects where the brief is common and meet the requirements for each individual project, whether it's negotiable or not.

  1. Mark,

You have made a good start here but it is lacking in attention to detail and also audience feedback. You must include the questions and responses from your questionnaire in order to pass Unit 33 and you need to relate what your audience said to your video (using print screen comparisons). Add other evidence too such as the ESting competition rules.

I would also like you to read through your post carefully and with Kim in order to pick up on and change the spelling errors - headings like constraints should not be spelled incorrectly.

    Unit 5 - P
    Unit 33 - R

  2. Add a couple of print screens from your work that relate to what the feedback says.
