Newsreaders-a connotational analysis

Newsreaders-a connotational analysis

This is a BBC news report in America at the 11 of September 2001 or well known as the 9/11.
The 9/11 happen in New York City in America, it's a terrorist attack.
The attack killed almost 3000 people and caused at least 10 billion dollar in property and infrastructure damage.
The news reader gives the head line that there is a terrorist attack at the very first start after the opening sequence to suggest to the audience the news item on the program. Around 2001 the news is quite famous for terrorist attacks, for example USS Cole bombing or Suicide bombing. This is the big serious news as 2 planes crash into 2 of the tallest buildings in New York known as the Twin Towers, causing traffic accidents and injuries and ultimately many deaths in the surrounding areas.

Title sequence
The opening sequence on this news program shows us that the news are serious and urgent by using beat music to show a serious impression. The opening sequence is also make it look like it's rushing it to the audiences using fast and focus shot. The colour of the graphics is mostly red which can be linked or giving the impression of danger and any other warning sign which most of the news are (crminal, accident etc). The graphics sequence also shows the picture of England (location) which they try to give the audiences a certain idea pictures of where this is happening. At the very beginning (0:02) it's has names of a few countries and cities like Hongkong, Belgrade, Berlin and Brusseles within the ring which shows that they are covering worlds news. At 0:03 minutes there is a picture of a clock pointing at 10 which is the name of the program ( BBC news at 10 ) which also broadcast at 10 pm. A picture of a clock can be linked therefore to represent time and when it's put all together with the music, colour and graphics , this makes it look like the program is rushing the news for you as soon as they get it.

News reader
After the opening the news reader is already siting at the desk waiting to present the news to the audiences without any facial expression to show his own opinion of the news. As the news reader has to remain neutral they dress formally (men in suits, women in dress). They are looking at the screen under the camera which makes it look like they are looking at the audience to make eye contact to those who is watching. They also have to speak standard English, slow and clear therefore making it easy to understand without using slang or accents however they are using deep voices to show the seriousness. The language used is meant to demonstrate the seriousness of each news item e.g. nightmare  to explain the situation of the 9/11. The reporter also acts calmly to get his news information across to the audience without influencing opionions.

Mise-en-scene of the studio
Mise-en-sene that are prepare for the news to be present to the audience which shows in this clip video are only certain importance item. Forexample the information sheets to help the news reader presenting a news item, costume (men:suit, women:dress) to show the formality of the news, background that are representing the news which I believe it's a green screen and can only be apear to the audiences. Makeup and hair product are included to keep the news reader look good/smart therefore representing them in the middle class person. Table and chair which obvioursly needed I also believe that table and chair are set in the certain way because when those are out off screen, it looks like the news reader are standing up while presenting the news.
